Dairy Block Unit Manager | Te Hou Farms Limited

WHERE
Te Hou Farms Limited is a large-scale dairy farming operation located 15km west of Bulls, in the Rangitikei District. The farm ownership is two thirds Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa Developments and one third Ātihau Whanganui Incorporation.

The business is made up of two contiguous properties totalling 1324 ha which includes a 500 ha irrigated dairy unit and the balance is utilised for cropping and drystock. Run as a closed farming operation, the business is milking 1580 cows at peak with split calving. The cows calve on the 824 ha drystock unit and the cows are then moved back onto the dairy unit.

Te Hou Farms Limited are constantly making business improvements, including the recent completion of a new fully automated 80 bale Waikato Rotary Shed. The owners take great pride in their farming asset and recognise the importance of having the right people working in their business.

WHAT
The Dairy Unit Manager is a newly created position within Te Hou Farms Limited and requires a highly motivated person with a good level of experience on large scale and high performing dairy units. Primarily the appointee will be responsible for the dairy unit but will also provide support to the Operations Manager on the drystock block and with running the overall farming business in his absence.

Key to your success in this role will be your knowledge of stock, the animal health requirements and a strong understanding of pasture and feed management as Te Hou Farms Limited have a strong focus on cow intake.
You will need to understand the workings of a farm that is 75% under irrigation and producing a high level of feed. There is a nutritionist available weekly for support in this area.

WHO
Our client is looking for a Dairy Unit Manager with strong staff management skills and a strong understanding of pasture and feed management. The below are also key to success in this role:

  • Must have large scale dairy farming experience with a degree of responsibility.
  • Good understanding of shed management and hygiene standards.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience on NZ dairy farms is required with two of them in a management position.
  • A high level of stockmanship and animal health identification and management.
  • Strong level of pasture/feed management as the farm is performing at a high level of production and there is a focus on cow/feed intake.
  • Must have irrigation experience and an understanding of pivots.
  • Must have staff management experience and good leadership and mentoring skills.
