WHERE
Kilgaren Limited is a family-owned farming business situated just 3km from Waipukurau in Central Hawke’s Bay. The property spans 900ha of both owned and leased flat to easy-rolling land, supporting a diverse farming operation that includes beef finishing, sheep breeding and finishing, and a specialist deer unit focused on velvet production.
 
The farm is well set up with excellent laneways and tracks, along with practical subdivision for efficient stock movement.
 
Kilgaren fosters a supportive, family-oriented team environment and actively encourages ongoing learning and professional development.
 
 
WHAT
Step into a pivotal role as 2IC at Kilgaren, working closely with the owner and gaining hands-on experience across a diverse and dynamic farming operation. You will work with all stock classes—including deer—and have a real say in both daily decisions and long-term farm planning.
 
The 2IC will need to be confident working independently and capable of making informed decisions when required, especially given the scale and diversity of the property. A strong focus is placed on pasture and feed management, and cattle performance is closely tracked using modern technology.
 
This intensive farming operation will give you variety in your working day and as you gain further understanding of the farming operation, you will be given additional responsibility and autonomy.

WHO
Kilgaren are looking for a 2IC who is self driven and able to work independently. The below are also key to success in this role:
  • Solid skills and experience in handling livestock.
  • Good knowledge of pasture management and planning feed budgets.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years practical farming experience.
  • Strong understanding of animal health and care practices.
  • An understanding of accurate farm recording and monitoring, using phone apps and in yards weigh technology.
  • Able to manage and control a team of 2–3 working dogs.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organisational abilities.
  • Practical skills in repairing and maintaining fencing (including electric fences) and water systems.
